CBSE chief: finish projects in classrooms

October 2011

The Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) in CBSE schools is not about more class tests, but about assessing the progress of learning process among students, Chairman of the Central Board of Secondary Education Vineet Joshi has said.

Addressing the All Kerala CBSE Principals' Conference here on Sunday, he urged teachers not to assign to students projects that were beyond their capacity.

“As far as possible, projects should be completed in the classroom under the teacher's guidance. Assigning projects as homework steals children of their play time and puts stress on parents who are forced to complete them,” he said.

Mr. Joshi said that when it came to accreditation of schools, infrastructure development was not as important as the teaching-learning process. Teachers' training should not be restricted to once a year, but should be a continuous and comprehensive process. “The Sahodaya complexes can play a major role in empowering the teachers,” he said and suggested that the schools share their facilities with nearby schools which lack proper infrastructure.

Later, Director of Spirit of Learning, New Delhi, Sheba Maini spoke on ‘Educational Leadership in 21 {+s} {+t} century.' Senior child psychiatrist Philip John spoke on ‘Bridging the gap and reshaping schooling'.

Innovation and Research Head of CBSE Dr.Sadhana Parashar spoke on ‘Innovations in Contemporary teaching- learning process'.

The conference which was inaugurated by former minister K.Muraleedharan on Saturday concluded on Sunday. More than 700 Principals from all over the state took part in the conference, organised by the Confederation of Kerala Sahodaya Complexes.
